#7: Annette Peacock - I'm The One [1972, Vinyl]
Music » Music Box - Divers :: GROVER
27 May 2010

Annette Peacock's work as a vocalist, pianist, and composer is austere, cryptic, laconic, minimalistic, and relentlessly individual. Her dry delivery and penchant for stark, stripped-down musical "environments" have made her something of a cult figure and an icon of the avant-garde. An early participant (1961-1962) in Dr. Timothy Leary's psychedelic culture experiments and a longtime adherent of Zen Macrobiotics, Peacock has been releasing albums since 1968. But her career has been marked by fairly long periods of silence; this partly explains her relative obscurity.

Aside from a brief period of formal study at Juilliard during the 1970s, Peacock is entirely self-taught. Born in Brooklyn, she began composing by the time she was five. Her first professional association was with saxophonist Albert Ayler, with whom she toured Europe in the 1960s. She soon began to write in an idiom she calls the "free-form song," which emphasizes the use of space in contrast to the busy, cacophonous tendencies of free jazz. During this period she met and married her first husband, the double bass virtuoso Gary Peacock. She also began to write material specifically for the avant-garde pianist Paul Bley and his trio. For decades, Bley has remained one of her most devoted interpreters.

Among her other accomplishments, Peacock is an unsung pioneer of electronic music. Years before the commercial emergence of synthesizers, she received a prototype from inventor Robert Moog. This prompted her to synthesize her own voice, which according to most reports had never been done before. Ultimately these experiments brought about an innovative 1971 album, The Bley/Peacock Synthesizer Show.

Despite her decidedly unorthodox profile, Peacock has had several interesting points of contact with mainstream culture. In 1978 she sang three songs on Feels Good to Me, a minor classic by progressive rock drummer Bill Bruford. Her song "My Mama Never Taught Me How to Cook" appears on the soundtrack of Kevin Smith's 1997 film Chasing Amy. And a sample from Peacock's song "Survival" crops up in "Tell 'Em Yu Madd" by Militant the Madd Rapper featuring Busta Rhymes. Most notably, David Bowie has shown interest in Peacock's work over the years. On his 1999 album Hours, the rock legend makes a fairly explicit reference to Peacock's song "I'm the One." Bowie subsequently invited Peacock to collaborate.

Pianist Marilyn Crispell saluted Peacock with a 1997 ECM disc titled Nothing Ever Was, Anyway: The Music of Annette Peacock. Peacock's one-track guest performance on the album ended a 12-year recording hiatus (her longest yet). But her official return to the studio came in 2000 with her own An Acrobat's Heart, also on ECM. Although many of her compositions appeared on Paul Bley's ECM titles through the years, Peacock had never herself previously recorded for the German-based label. [AMG]

Led by a refugee from the D.C. punk scene who rejected Dischord for its austerity and embraced the blues for its theatricality, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion found a way to mix musical styles into a potent cocktail. The band's basic riff is simple: Drummer Russell Simins pounds out brutal rhythms, guitarist Judah Bauer pummels repeated riffs mercilessly, and Spencer channels a frenzied mix of Elvis, Little Richard, and Ross Johnson. With no regard for the previous generation's interpretation of the blues-- Spencer is a living affront to Eric Clapton-- the Blues Explosion take everything tasteless and dangerous and ugly and irredeemable in rock and run with it. Their music is highly crafted and gloriously messy, heavily conceptual but still visceral, serious while also being funny. Nearly two decades after their formation, their music has outlived its superficial provocations and hits with a force that is perhaps even greater now than it was the first time around.

Dirty Shirt Rock 'n' Roll surveys the years between their 1992 debut and 2002's Plastic Fang. Unlike the consistently name-checked and beloved Pavement, another Matador band with a new retrospective in stores, the Blues Explosion seem ripe for re-evaluation. The early-2000s garage rock revival and the success of the White Stripes have given us a new context to hear these disarrayed blues-rock excursions, which similarly peel back the layers to get to rock's core elements.

In the 1990s, however, when Spencer was a contemporary of Steve Malkmus, Robert Pollard, and Mac MacCaughan, this music sounded so far removed from any particular scene that the band could be easily dismissed as an anomaly. In retrospect, Spencer's real peers may have been the Afghan Whigs' Greg Dulli and Beck, artists who had very specific ideas about how to transform African-American music traditions into a personal style that made sense to the alt-rock nation. Unlike either of them, Spencer borrowed almost exclusively from pre-Beatles sources: blaring mid-century blues riffs, outlandish vocals from some fever dream of the 50s, and no truck with niceties like song structure. Tracks like "Chicken Dog" (a great duet with the late Rufus Thomas) and the slithery "Afro" meander aggressively, as if demanding and daring you to keep up. "Bellbottoms", one of JSBX's better-known singles, doesn't even get started until nearly two minutes in, by which time the band has been hammering away next to a string arrangement by Lalo Schifrin. The song screeches to a halt and peels out again in the direction of a terrifically catchy call-and-response chant. How do the two halves connect? These guys could care less.

As the decade wore on, the Blues Explosion began tinkering with their fairly austere sound, which lead to collaborations with Dan the Automator and Alec Empire. If at the time they seemed to have lost the thread, Dirty Shirt Rock 'n' Roll argues that they still held firm to their core values. Moving back and forth in time, with no regard whatsoever for intelligible chronology, the comp holds together remarkably well, like a good live setlist or a friend's mixtape. Guests from Beck to hard-living R&B legend Andre Williams sit naturally with the Blues Explosion's sparer guitar-drums-Theremin breakdowns, suggesting that for all their reliance on decades-old styles and gestures, these gloriously messy songs live in the present. Whatever you or Spencer or anyone else calls it, this music is just as exciting and alienating now as it was then.

#10: Richard Bona: The Ten Shades of Blues (2009)
Music » Jazz Smooth Soul :: GROVER
20 May 2010
Tracklist: Take One; Shiva Mantra; Good Times; M'Bemba Mama; Kurumalete; Souleymane; African Cowboy; Esukudu; Yara's Blues; Sona Moyo; Camer Secrets
Personnel: Rochard Bona: vocals, bass, keyboards, guitars, drums, percussion, mandolin, samples; Shankar Mahadevan: vocals; Nandini Srikar: vocals; Vivek Rajgopalan: mridangam, ganjira, konnakol; Satyajit Talwalkar: tabla, konnakol; Niladiri Kumar: sitar; Bob Reynolds: saxophone; Michael Rodrigues: trumpet; Marshall Gilkes: trombone; Frank McComb: vocals; Obed Calvaire: drums; Gregoire Maret: harmonica; Sylvain Luc: guitars; Jean-Michel Pilk: piano; Christian Howes: fiddle; Bailo Baa: fula flute; Jojo Kuoh: drums; Ryan Cavanaugh: banjo; Bert Van den Brink: hammond organ
Widely known in jazz circles for his virtuosity on the bass, relatively little attention has been paid to Richard Bona's solo career. Pity, as his solo records are generally excellent. Bona's records have a style that can only be referred to as world music. Generally, that term is misused, but Bona truly takes his influences from all over the world. Sure, he's Cameroonian, and his heritage plays a large role. But one can also hear overt references to jazz, bluegrass, blues, European pop and much, much more in Bona's music. This adds a sense of unpredictability to his work—it's impossible to know what to expect and so just about anything is possible.
Bona's The Ten Shades of Blues continues in the same vein. There are references to India, Africa, and good ol' down home Americana, all interpreted with Bona's natural flair and effervescent smile. As on most of his other solo work, the multitalented Bona is everywhere and plays almost everything. The album opens with "Take One," a choral masterpiece—except all of the voices are Bona's. "Shiva Mantra" follows, and here Bona is credited with lead and background vocals, bass, keyboards, guitars and percussion. Somehow, on this track, Bona manages to be at the forefront of the background, keeping the music grounded in jazz and African traditions while being overtly Indian. It's Indian religious music—with a kickin' bass line.
The special guests on the album also leave their imprint. "Shiva Mantra" works due to the powerful vocals of Shankar Mahadevan (John McLaughlin's Remember Shakti) and Nandini Srikar, as well as Niladiri Kumar's tasteful sitar. "Good Times" is a showcase for R&B vocalist Frank McComb and harmonica master Gregoire Maret. Ryan Cavanaugh, Bona's compatriot in Bill Evans' Soulgrass ensemble, joins in on banjo along with fiddler Christian Howes on "African Cowboy," a rootsy bluesgrass mйlange.
"M'Bemba Mama" is a highlight. A simple ballad, Bona's light yet powerful voice fits perfectly, with Jean-Michel Pilc's piano and Sylvain Luc's guitars providing beautiful counterpoint. While lighthearted, "M'Bemba Mama" is bubbling with emotion. Bona's vocal incorporates just the slightest bit of longing while managing to stay positive.
Bona is certainly a talent deserving wider recognition. His considerable musicianship speaks for itself, and his passion for music is evident in all of his work, whether as a sideman or a leader. The Ten Shades of Blues continues his excellent solo work, joining the likes of Scenes from My Life and Tiki as essential.

In January 1969, former Yardbirds members Keith Relf, and Jim McCarty organised a new group devoted to experimentation between rock, Folk, and classical forms. This quintet — Relf on guitar & vocals, McCarty on drums, plus bassist Louis Cennamo, pianist John Hawken, and Relf's sister Jane Relf as an additional vocalist — released a pair of albums on Elektra (US) and Island (UK), being produced by fellow ex-Yardbird Paul Samwell-Smith.
...............................
The band had begun performing in May 1969, before recording had begun for the debut LP, mostly in the UK, but with occasional forays abroad, including festivals in Belgium (Amougies, October 1969) and France (Operation 666 at the Olympia in January 1970, and Le Bourget in March 1970, both in Paris). In February 1970, they embarked on a North American tour, but this month-long trek proved a mitigated success, as because of their Yardbirds credentials they found themselves paired with bands like The Kinks and their new classically-oriented direction didn't always go down well with audiences.
...............................
The band developed a unique sound, known for Hawken's elaborate piano arrangements, Louis Cennamo's powerful and melodic bass lines, Keith's fluid guitar scales, Jim's powerful drumming and Jane's haunting voice. The sound fused elements of classical, folk, rock and blues -- along with elements which years later would be tagged "World Music" . For their first recording, the band worked with producer Paul Samwell-Smith for the group's album for Island Records. The self-titled 1969 album drew interest on both sides of the Atlantic -- with two different covers for the British (Island Records) and American (Elektra Records) audiences -- and across the English Channel where it was released as the "Kings & Queens" album by Island Records for much of the rest of Europe.

The songs were created, at least in part, based on Keith and Jim's songs which were then interpreted by John Hawken and Louis Cennamo. Regarding the process, bassist Louis Cennamo recalls: "We were just pushing the music in any way that we could. It was a lovely time and one in which there were no real limits. It was very creative and we were free to take the music in nearly any direction we wanted. John's classical training was the basis but the rest of us explored any ideas that added to the sound. It was a wonderful time and John and I worked very hard to add many new interpretations to the melodies and ideas that Keith and Jim brought to the rest of the band. Some of their ideas were quite developed when they brought them to us but some were not. So, John and I were free to create the kind of elaborate melodies that were so integral to the sound of Renaissance. Other times, everyone would just experiment and we'd test any and all ideas that came to us. The band was getting on quite well and we were developing a strong bond and admiration for one another. It was a beautiful time really..."Here

Disconet Remix Greatest Hits Vol 1-Vol 18
DISCONET was part of a New York based company called Sugarscoop - created as subscription program service with professionally selected and mixed disco music for discotheque DJs, mobile discos and radio stations. Program content was selected by DISCONET DJs from new disco releases made available by Record Companies which have licensed DISCONET to provide the service.

DISCONET is called as the "Granddaddy" of all remix services and provided mixed/segued DJ dance sets, not only to make the DJs job a little bit easier, but to expose club goers to new music. The DJs spinning at the height of the disco era were given access to a new creative tool - a different interpretation of current dance tunes to wow club goers.

Disconet"s founder Mike "captain" Wilkinson presented his project during the "Billboard Disco III Forum". His concern was to start a service featuring specially remixed records including unreleased songs as well as hit medleys were to be released on 12" vinyl records. Originally, the Disconet records were to be issued on a monthly basis. Only a limited number 1000 - 1500 copies of each issue was available.

The first Disconet record was released in October 1977. Disconet team at that time was: Tom Savarese, Bobby DJ Guttadaro and Kevin Guilmet as well as Mike Wilkinson. Tom, Bobby and Kevin were DJ legends, who had already been awarded with the "DJ Of The Year" title by Billboard. During the very first year every record consisted of club hits mixed together and each side would run for some 15 to 20 minutes.

All tracks are separate and 192kbs!!!

#16: Dee Dee Bridgwater: Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee (2010)
Music » Jazz Smooth Soul :: GROVER
27 April 2010
Over the course of a multifaceted career that has spanned four decades, Dee Dee Bridgewater has risen to the top tier of today's jazz vocalists, putting her own unique spin on standards as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. For her latest recording, Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee, Bridgewater honors an iconic jazz figure, Billie Holiday, who died tragically at the age of 44 a half-century ago. Ms. Bridgewater states that Eleanora Fagan goes far deeper than being a tribute album of retreaded Holiday tunes. "Billie deserves to have her music heard in another light," she says, "and I definitely didn't set out to imitate her." Key to the fresh approach is pianist Edsel Gomez, Bridgewater's longtime band mate who wrote new arrangements for the 12 songs on the album, including the African polyrhythmic-charged interpretation of "Lady Sings the Blues, " a reharmonized version of "All of Me" and the gospel-tinged "God Bless the Child." Says Bridgewater: "Edsel is an extremely gifted, talented arranger with very modern ideas. Edsel has the ability to be modern and work in a tasteful fashion." Gomez took on the daunting challenge of bringing new life to the music with enthusiasm. "I listened to everything Billie Holiday ever recorded," he says. "I let her music speak to me." He also kept in mind the personalities of the all-star band Bridgewater had assembled for the recording: dynamic reeds player James Carter, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. "This was my dream band," says Bridgewater. "I got to work with these musicians who I'd been dying to play with. I thought, I can't miss. With this band I can have a hard-swinging, touching celebration of Billie's music."
Bridgewater sings into the nuances of such songs as "Good Morning Heartache," "Lover Man" and "Fine and Mellow" with an allure that's equal parts sexy, spunky and sublime. "This was the first time when I wasn't concerned about having a particular sound of voice," Bridgewater says. "I was just singing from my gut. It was all so swinging and so soulful." Other highlights include the haunting "You've Changed" with Carter blowing smoky soul to complement Bridgewater's moving vocals, the spunky "Mother's Son-in-Law" with McBride dueting with the coquettish singer, and the uptempo "Miss Brown to You" featuring Nash's drumming prowess. Over the course of her career, Bridgewater has paid homage to monumental figures of the music world, recording albums dedicated to Ella Fitzgerald (the Grammy Award-winning Dear Ella, 1997), Horace Silver (Love and Peace: A Tribute to Horace Silver, 1995) and Kurt Weill (This Is New, 2002). But with Eleanora Fagan--the follow-up to 2007's brilliant Red Earth: A Malian Journey that melded the music of Mali with jazz--Bridgewater delivers one of the most remarkable recording performances of her career. "Dee Dee is a spirited dynamo and a soulful balladeer," says liner note writer Dan Ouellette. "She sings with a razor-edged voice; she scats with abandon; she makes you cry. She even chokes up herself upon descending into the ghoulish drama of `Strange Fruit,' which serves as the album's poignant finale. She gives a moving read with a sparse arrangement supporting her." Instead of playing it safe and recreating her performance in Lady Day, on Eleanora Fagan, Bridgewater reacquaints herself with Holiday, shining a new ray of love on the often-misunderstood jazz icon. "I wanted the record to be a collection that would not be like the music of the show," she says. That philosophy is in keeping with Bridgewater's approach to all of her projects: "I want to move forward, just as I've done with each of my albums. To not go backwards, but progress. Constantly."

#17: Ahmad Jamal: It's Magic (2008)
Music » Jazz Smooth Soul :: GROVER
27 April 2010
Ahmad Jamal's tenth US release on the French label Birdology/Dreyfus Jazz, It's Magic, was published on June 10, 2008. It has been three years since After Fajr, the critically acclaimed album The New York Times declared "one of his best" (Ben Ratliff, May 30, 2005), and Ahmad Jamal has been keeping very busy.
The 77-years old pianist, composer, arranger, producer, manager, and officier (more on that later) has been touring the world, writing new compositions, selling out concert halls, and discovering, producing, and nurturing new talent. Mr. Jamal, who has always known how to get attention and keep it, has been continuously improving his repertoire, never once resting on his laurels.
The eagerly awaited new album, from one of the most revered pianist on the international music scene, is all about remembering the past while continuing to develop new territory. Dedicated to Jean-François Deiber, his friend and producer who passed away just before After Fajr's release, It's Magic features six originals, two of which have never been recorded, and three standards with celluloid connection.
From the opening track, "Dynamo," Ahmad Jamal signals a new direction almost immediately. Often cited for his brilliant and expansive work in a trio format, Ahmad augments his sonic landscape with the percolating beats of percussionist Manolo Badrena, backed by his long-time rhythm section featuring drummer Idris Muhammad and bassist James Cammack. He revisits "Swahililand," his hauntingly beautiful composition, a concert favorite previously heard on After Fajr (also on 1974's Jamal Plays Jamal and 1987's Crystal), with exquisite styling and impressive command. Rarely heard "Back to the Island" is dynamic, showcasing Ahmad's faultless technique.
Ahmad Jamal delivers an unforgettable interpretation in the title track, "It's Magic," the Academy Award nominated song by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne from the film Romance on the High Seas. Ahmad shines, stunningly backed by his trio, traversing the comic highs and lows in a romance of mistaken identities, and elevates the breezy musical number to a lyrical poem.
No stranger to hit songs (Ahmad is one of the few jazz artists to score a Top 10 Pop hit with an instrumental - "Poinciana"), Ahmad has also been sampled extensively by hip-hop artists such as Jay-Z, Nas, and Common, among others. On "Wild is the Wind/Sing," Ahmad sends up a rollicking take on the popular song "Wild is the Wind" by Ned Washington and Dimitri Tiomkin from Wild is the Wind and "Sing" written by Joe Raposo for Sesame Street (a hit for The Carpenters); and offers an inventive and unusual interpretation of the Academy Award winner for Best Original Song "The Way You Look Tonight" by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields from the Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger's film Swing Time.
Ahmad Jamal may be one of the last living titans of jazz's so-called-Golden-Era who continues to redefine modern jazz. Nowhere is this more evident than in "Fitnah" and "Papillon", two new compositions which have never been recorded.

#18: John Pizzarelli: Rockin in Rhythm - A Tribute to Duke Ellington (2010)
Music » Jazz Smooth Soul :: GROVER
27 April 2010
Singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli, a master in the art of reinventing jazz classics, celebrates the music of Duke Ellington, undeniably one of the most prominent musical icons of the 20th century. Rockin' In Rhythm: A Tribute to Duke Ellington is Pizzarelli's first ever Ellington recording.
Pizzarelli was still a very young musician when Ellington died in May 1974, but thanks to his father - veteran guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli - he would eventually learn much about jazz's most important composer. "Duke's music was an integral part of any set my father played," says Pizzarelli. "I heard a tremendous amount of his music listening to my Dad and then through performing with him. There are some many beautiful melodies and so many discoveries to be made on any given night."
Like Ellington, Pizzarelli crafts his performances to spotlight the talents of his band members. In addition to a solo track ("Just Squeeze Me"), four songs on Rockin' In Rhythm showcases his quartet - pianist Larry Fuller, bassist/brother Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco - and seven tracks include the Swing Seven horns with arrangements by Don Sebesky.
Rockin' In Rhythm combines the enduring work of Duke Ellington with John Pizzarelli's incredible ability to reinterpret the Great American Songbook. Pizzarelli says, "Don Sebesky surprised us all at the session when, after the `keeper' take of `C Jam,' he said that we should `thank Pizzarelli for getting us all together to play Duke Ellington.' Well, I am grateful that when I chose to salute such an American icon as Duke Ellington, I had such tremendous friends and associates to help realize my dream."

#20: BARBARA THOMPSON - SONGS FROM THE CENTER OF THE EARTH
Music » Oldies Medley :: GROVER
14 April 2010
alt

Songs from the Center of the Earth is a solo recording by veteran British jazz saxophonist,
composer, and band leader, Barbara Thompson. On Songs from the Center of the Earth, the rich yet plaintive sounds of Thompson's saxophones seem to ring through the mists of time. Her compelling solo improvisations on ancient melodies were recorded over two hot summer nights in August 1990 at the historic Abbey du Thoronet in Var, Provence, France. "I have long thought
that folk songs lie dormant at the center of us until recognition is triggered by an experience," she says. "As the Abbey dates back to medieval times, I thought it fitting to play traditional church and folk pieces from all over the world, some of which are older than the Abbey itself."

The warm, resonant setting enhances Thompson's updated interpretations of Irish airs, twelth century Crusade chants, Syrian love ballads, ancient Spanish cradle songs, and folk melodies from Greece, Germany, Jamaica, Brazil, and Uruguay. Performing on soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, Thompson draws on her extensive jazz background to embellish this music with expressive pitch bends and glissandos that bring these age-old tunes firmly into the twentieth
century. Sometimes gently reminiscent, sometimes powerful in their evocation of timeless emotions, Thompson's masterful improvisations provide an eloquent commentary on the past.

Kat Edmonson - Take to the Sky

Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Kat Edmonson is a jazz singer with a habit for choosing some inspired songs. She opens with the very common Summertime, and gives the song a confident version.

But she continues with the Cure’s Just like Heaven done in a dreamy fashion where her voice just shines. She has a coquettish tone that teases new meaning out of the songs.

She gets to do an impish Lovefool by the Cardigans and imbues it with new spirit. She makes the song seem fresh again, which is hard to do with songs, which have been played to death. It has the hint of bossa enhanced and is all the better for it.

(Just like) Staring Over by John Lennon gets a relaxed makeover for the finale.

Edmonson is a gifted interpreter and a terrific singer.

#27: ETTA JAMES - MISTERY LADY: SONGS OF BILLIE HOLIDAY
Music » Oldies Medley :: GROVER
13 April 2010
alt

The popular Etta James usually performs raunchy single-entendre blues so this surprisingly subtle outing is a real change of pace. She sounds quite laidback on a set of ballads associated with Billie Holiday and utilizes a jazz rhythm section led by pianist Cedar Walton plus three horn players including the great Red Holloway on tenor and alto. James makes no attempts at exploring uptempo material or scatting, sticking to soulful interpretations of the classic ballads. Despite the lack of variety in tempoes, the music is quite satisfying. #28: Roberta Flack
Music » Pop SynthPop New Wave, Slow pop, :: GROVER
13 April 2010
Collection of Roberta Flack

Classy, urbane, reserved, smooth, and sophisticated -- all of these terms have been used to describe the music of Roberta Flack, particularly her string of romantic, light jazz ballad hits in the 1970s, which continue to enjoy popularity on MOR-oriented adult contemporary stations. Flack was the daughter of a church organist and started playing piano early enough to get a music scholarship and eventual degree from Howard University. After a period of student teaching, Flack was discovered singing at a club by jazz musician Les McCann and signed to Atlantic.

Her first two albums were well received but produced no hit singles; however, that all changed when a version of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," from her first LP, was included in the soundtrack of Play Misty for Me. The single zoomed to number one in 1972 and remained there for six weeks, becoming that year's biggest hit. Flack followed it with the first of several duets with Howard classmate Donny Hathaway, "Where Is the Love." "Killing Me Softly With His Song" became Flack's second number one hit (five weeks) in 1973, and after topping the charts again in 1974 with "Feel Like Makin' Love," Flack took a break from performing to concentrate on recording and charitable causes.

She charted several more times over the next few years, but a major blow struck in 1979 when Hathaway committed suicide. Devastated, Flack was forced to find another partner and eventually did in Peabo Bryson, with whom she toured in 1980. The two recorded together in 1983, scoring a hit duet with "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love." Flack spent the remainder of the '80s touring and performing, often with orchestras, and also several times with Miles Davis. She returned to the Top Ten once more in 1991 with "Set the Night to Music," a duet with Maxi Priest that appeared that year on the album of the same name. Her Roberta full-length, featuring interpretations of jazz and popular standards, followed in 1995.

#30: Parvati Khan - Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja (1982)
Music » Italo Disco :: GROVER
5 April 2010

Georgie Dann (n.

#33: Baccara - Darling (1978)
Music » Italo Disco :: GROVER
29 March 2010

#37: Anita Ward - Ring My Bell (1979)
Music » Italo Disco :: GROVER
29 March 2010

#39: JAMES GANG - YER' ALBUM (ABC-BLUESWAY 1969) Jap mastering cardboard sleeve

Formed in 1967 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the embryonic James Gang comprised Glenn Schwartz (guitar/vocals), Tom Kriss (bass/vocals) and Jim Fox (drums/vocals). Schwartz left in April 1969 to join Pacific Gas And Electric, but Joe Walsh (b. Joseph Fidler Walsh, 20 November 1947, Wichita, Kansas, USA) proved a more than competent replacement. Yer' Album blended originals with excellent interpretations of material drawn from Buffalo Springfield ("Bluebird") and the Yardbirds ("Lost Woman"). The band enjoyed the approval of Pete Townshend, who admired their mature cross-section of British and "west coast" rock.
.............................................
The James Gang's debut LP, Yer' Album, was very much a first record and very much a record of its time. The heavy rock scene of the period was given to extensive jamming, and four tracks ran more than six minutes each. The group had written some material, but they were still something of a cover band, and the disc included their extended workouts on Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" and the Yardbirds' "Lost Woman," the latter a nine-minute version complete with lengthy guitar, bass, and drum solos. But in addition to the blues rock there were also touches of pop and progressive rock, mostly from Walsh who displayed a nascent sense of melody, not to mention some of the taste for being a cutup that he would display in his solo career. Walsh's "Take a Look Around" must have made an impression on Pete Townshend during the period before the album's release when the James Gang was opening for the Who since Townshend borrowed it for the music he was writing for the abortive Lifehouse follow-up to Tommy. If "Wrapcity (i.e., Rhapsody) in English," a minute-long piano and strings interlude, seems incongruous in retrospect, recall that this was an eclectic era. But the otherwise promising "Fred," which followed, broke down into a pedestrian jazz routine, suggesting that the band was trying to cram too many influences onto one record and sometimes into one song. Nevertheless, they were talented improvisers, as the open-ended album closer, Jerry Ragavoy and Mort Shuman's "Stop," made clear. After ten minutes, Szymczyk faded the track out, but Walsh was still going strong. Yer' Album contained much to suggest that the James Gang, in particular its guitarist, had a great future, even if it was more an album of performances than compositions...(allmusic)

#40: NELSON RIDDLE - THE JOY OF LIVING (1959)

8. June in January
9. Isn't this a Lovely Day
10. Indian Summer
11. It's a Grand Night for Singing
12. I got the Sun in the Morning

Nelson Riddle was quite possibly the greatest arranger in the history of American popular music. Over the course of his long and distinguished career, he was also a popular soundtrack composer, a conductor, a trombonist, and an occasional hitmaker in his own right. He worked with many of the major pop vocalists of his day, but it was his immortal work with Frank Sinatra, particularly on the singer's justly revered Capitol concept albums, that cemented Riddle's enduring legacy. Riddle was a master of mood and subtlety, and an expert at drawing out a song's emotional subtext. He was highly versatile in terms of style, mood, and tempo, and packed his charts full of rhythmic and melodic variations and rich tonal colors that blended seamlessly behind the lead vocal line. He often wrote specifically for individual vocalists, keeping their strengths and limitations in mind and pushing them to deliver emotionally resonant performances. As such, Riddle was perfectly suited to the task of framing vocal interpreters, as opposed to just singers; he was most in sync with the more nuanced and artistically ambitious vocalists, like Sinatra. Riddle knew how to lay back and bring certain lyrics or vocal subtleties to the forefront, and how to add countermelodies that emphasized other lyrics, or made important transitions. He could draw the listener in with catchy embellishments, challenge them with adventurous harmonies, and build to climaxes that faded into surprisingly restrained endings. In short, Riddle was everything a top-notch singer could ask for.

#41: Wishful Thinking - Hiroshima (1971)
Rare Albums :: GROVER
22 March 2010
altalt• Hiroshima - A schmaltzy interpretation about a bitter subject. Once I wanted to be a do-gooder but they just beat me to it.
• This Time Tomorrow - Nice pop-song, nothing more and nothing less.
• She Belongs To The Night - Recently compiled on Fairytales Can Come True Vol. 5. I think my mother would like it (Hey! Don't say nothing against my mum! She's 81!).
• Mary Goodbye - That's a good one. Sounds like late '60s pop-sike (Toby Twirl, World Of Oz ect.).
• Ever Since I Can Remember - A ballad (as far as I can remember).
• We're Gonna Change All This - A good pick for Mr. Toytown Vol. 4. Not my cup of tea.

B-Side:
• Now - Started with a folk guitar and turns into a late sixties style ballad with harmony vocals. Three years to late but who cares about that in 2010? I like it.
• United States Of Europe '79 - Pop-Rock, not what I regularly hear but the chorus is great.
• I Wrote A Song - Not that I would even be remotely interested.
• 1984 - If we're talking about Psychedelic music, then this is their magnum opus. Unusual for this album but perhaps the best song they've ever made. Compiled on Psychedelic Pstones Vol. 4.
• Goodbye Lover - I think my father would like it (Hey! Don't say nothing against my dad! He's 82!)

#42: POLLY BERGEN - ALL ALONE BY THE TELEPHONE (1959)
Music » Oldies Medley :: GROVER

alt1. All Alone
2. Something Wonderful
3. Glad to Be Unhappy
4. Too Late Now
5. He Didn't Call
6. Spring Is Here
7. By Myself
8. When the Wind Was Green
9. It's Easy to Remember
10. Not Like Me
11. I'm Always Chasing Rainbows
12. I'm Glad There Is You

All Alone by the Telephone pairs Polly Bergen with arranger Luther Henderson to create a deeply melancholy song cycle that explores romantic estrangement and isolation from a refreshingly adult perspective. Bergen's dusky, world-weary vocals never resort to histrionics, finding their mode of expression in restraint, not release -- her thoughtful interpretations of material like "Glad to Be Unhappy," "Too Late Now," and "By Myself" strip the songs to their core, articulating their themes of loss with hard-fought maturity. Henderson's sympathetic, meticulous arrangements are no less essential to the album's uncommon sophistication. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Caçuá, a word with Tupi (Indigenous Brazilian Language) origins, is a wicker or vine basket used to carry provisions and is transported by beasts of burden in the inland parts of the Brazilian Northeast.

The mixture of colors and spices very much Brazilian, this Caçuá brings together genres like choro, samba, baião and xote, framed by arrangements that highlight the sound of the quartet lead by Nicolas Krassik.

The repertoire of Caçuá is also the first registration of Nicolas as a composer. The vibrant record exhibits the violinist’s talent in improvisation allied with his technique and sound characteristics.

Paul Giamatti stars as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of "Uncle Vanya." Paralyzed by anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by extracting souls. Giamatti enlists their service -- only to discover that his soul is the shape and size of a chickpea. His intention is to reinstate it once he survives the performance but complications ensue when a mysterious, soul-trafficking "mule" borrows Giamatti's stored soul for an ambitious, but unfortunately talentless, Russian soap-opera actress.

#46: HAMPTON HAVES - BIRD SONG
Music » Oldies Medley :: GROVER
26 February 2010
alt

Hampton Hawes was one of the finest jazz pianists of the 1950s, a fixture on the Los Angeles scene who brought his own interpretations to the dominant Bud Powell style. In the mid- to late '40s, he played with Sonny Criss, Dexter Gordon, and Wardell Gray, among others on Central Avenue. He was with Howard McGhee's band (1950-1951), played with Shorty Rogers and the Lighthouse All-Stars, served in the Army (1952-1954), and then led trios in the L.A. area, recording many albums for Contemporary. Arrested for heroin possession in 1958, Hawes spent five years in prison until he was pardoned by President Kennedy. He led trios for the remainder of his life, using electric piano (which disturbed his longtime fans) for a period in the early to mid-'70s, but returned to acoustic piano before dying from a stroke in 1977. Hampton Hawes' memoirs, Raise Up Off Me (1974), are both frank and memorable, and most of his records (for Xanadu, Prestige, Savoy, Contemporary, Black Lion, and Freedom) are currently available.

Jazz | MP3 VBR 320kbps | 129 MB

Time: 56:28 min | Label: Emarcy / Pgd

Emerging on the music scene 13 years ago, Julian Lage was quickly deemed a guitar-playing prodigy. Playing a unique style that melded blues, classical, folk and jazz influences, Lage received praise from musical luminaries, including Herbie Hancock and Bela Fleck. He chose to become a sideman with established instrumentalists like Gary Burton.

Now at the age of 21, Lage releases his debut album, Sounding Point, on EmArcy Records, an imprint of Universal Records. The music ranges from through-composed works and impromptu improvisations in duo and trio settings to solo excursions and a finale capped by a masterful interpretation of Miles Davis s All Blues. Lage also delivers impressive covers of Elliott Smith s Alameda and Neil Hefti s Lil Darlin. The CD features special guests Eigsti, Bela Fleck and renowned mandolinist Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers fame. ? Amazon.com

#49: ABBEY LINCOLN AND ARCHIE SHEPP - PAINTED LADY
Music » Oldies Medley :: GROVER
17 February 2010
alt

Throughout her impressive career, singer Abbey Lincoln has successfully matched her talents with some of the most powerful jazzmen. On this out-of-print Inner City LP, Lincoln is joined by trumpeter Roy Burroughs, pianist Hilton Ruiz, bassist Jack Gregg, drummer Freddie Waits and (most notably) tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp (on one of his better dates of the 1980s). Lincoln interprets three standards (including "Sophisticated Lady") but most impressive are her three originals, particularly "Caged Bird." Her interplay with Shepp gives proof (if it was still needed) that Abbey Lincoln has long been a major jazz singer.

1 - Sophisticated Lady
2 - Golden Lady
3 - Painted Lady on the Stage
4 - Throw It Away
5 - What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?
6 - Caged Bird

Michael Buble - Special Delivery

Originally released: 2010

Without raising much fuss, Michael Buble has become one of the biggest selling vocalists of the internet age by putting a show-tune sheen back into the jazz-orientated pop of Connick, Sinatra and Cole. "These Foolish Things" and "Dream a Little Dream" prove that Buble can be subtle, while the slyly rhythmic "Mack The Knife" shows that the Canadian crooner has learned as much from Stevie Wonder as he has from Bobby Darin.

On February 9th, Michael Bublé fans will have an opportunity to purchase “Special Delivery”, a group of six Bublé recorded songs that are currently unavailable in the marketplace. “Special Delivery” includes Bublé’s interpretations of the classics “These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You),” “Dream A Little Dream,” “I’m Beginning To See The Light,” “Mack the Knife,” “Orange Colored Sky” and "Softly As I Leave You.”

These songs are now available for the first time at iTunes and all digital retailers in one digital package – perfect timing for Valentine’s Day. These songs were previously available only on limited edition and special packages.

2. Softly As I Leave You

#51: DONNA WASHINGTON / For The Sake Of Love (1980)
Music » Funk Soul Funk Disco Slow :: GROVER
13 February 2010

This is a very recent find for me. For The Sake Of Love is Donna Washington's debut solo album on Capitol Records. 1981's Going For The Glow has already appeared at Divas Need Love Too! For The Sake Of Love came the year before Going For The Glow and in my opinion Washington's vocals are more emotive and soulful here than on that later album. Washington radiates youthful exuberance similar to Evelyn King or Stephanie Mills. However, unlike those singers, as an interpreter Washington can sometimes sound precocious and inexperienced, particularly on the ballads. While it boasts solid production and top-notch players, the songs are only average. "Didn't You Know" is an uptempo that resembles Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard" in theme and melody. "Much More Than Friends" features a lead vocal that probably shows off Washington's range more than the other tracks. "Innocent" is a preachy, strings-drenched ballad with a deep soul intro that sounds like it was lifted from the soundtrack of a 70s blaxploitation film. There is also a pleasant but too-faithful cover of the Chicago hit "If You Leave Me Now".

#53: BILL CHARLAP & SANDY STEWART - LOVE IS HERE TO STAY (2005)
Music » Oldies Medley :: GROVER
13 February 2010
alt1. Love Is Here To Stay
2. After You
3. The Boy Next Door
4. Happiness Is Just AThing Called Joe/A Sleepin' Bee
5. Always
6. Here I Am In Love Again
7. I've Got A Crush On You/Do It Again
8. Where Is Me
9. Dancing On The Ceiling
10. It Might As Well Be Spring
11. I'll Never Go There Anymore

Bill Charlap is one of the strongest mainstream jazz pianists on the scene and one of the most gifted interpreters of standards. He grew up in a musical household, as the son of Broadway songwriter Moose Charlap and singer Sandy Stewart. Taking to the piano at a young age, he went on to study at New York's High School of Performing Arts. He then entered college, but rather than finishing, opted to practice and gig on his own. Pianist Bill Mays soon took up Charlap's cause, recommending the young man as his replacement in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. During this time, Charlap also worked with Benny Carter, Clark Terry, and Frank Wess, and was sought after as an accompanist for singers such as Tony Bennett, Carol Sloane, and Sheila Jordan. In 1995, he secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz, with the Phil Woods Quintet.
All the while, Charlap showed steady development as a leader. His debut came in 1994 with Along with Me, followed by Souvenir in 1995 and Distant Star in 1996. His 1997 release, All Through the Night, was the first to feature his current trio, with the redoubtable (and unrelated) Washingtons, Peter and Kenny, on bass and drums respectively. In 2000, this lineup had its major-label breakthrough with the highly acclaimed Blue Note disc Written in the Stars. Two albums appeared in 2001: 2Gether with Warren Vaché and Contrasts with Jon Gordon. S Wonderful hit the shelves in 2002, as did Stardust, which began a series of albums that focused on a single composer. Stardust featured the music of Hoagy Carmichael, 2004's Somewhere was an all-Leonard Bernstein affair, while 2005's Plays George Gershwin featured ten songs by the man Charlap considers "the American soul." 2005 saw the release of an album with Sandy Stewart, Love Is Here to Stay. Two years later, Charlap released Live at the Village Vanguard. ~ David R. Adler, All Music Guide

#54: ESTHER MARROW - NEWPORT NEWS (1969)

altA1.He Don’t Appreciate It
A2.No Answer Came
A3.Hello Brother
A4.Money Honey
A5.Peaceful Man
B1.Mama
B2.Satisfied
B3.What A Wonderful World
B4.Walk Tall
B5.It’s Been A Long Night
B6.Chains Of Love

A real landmark of bad-walking soul -- one of 2 rare albums cut by vocalist Esther Marrow, easily one of the hardest singing sisters of her generation! Esther's got roots in gospel, but she's singing here in a righteous mode that features plenty of funky undercurrents in the backings -- a style that hits harder than work by Aretha Franklin or any of the better-known female singers of the time -- and which holds up beautifully over the years! Many tracks here are obscure ones, arranged tightly by Artie Butler and Gene Page, both of whom do a great job of blending fuller orchestrations with tighter drums on the bottom -- giving the record a good kick on most tracks, but still shading in the tunes with enough sophistication to match Esther's interpretation of the work.

#55: Cal Tjader: The Shining Sea (1981)
Music » Lounge , Hotels Mix, Nature :: GROVER
13 February 2010
altHave just spent a few days at a beach holiday resort with our daughter, husband and their friends. Had a wonderful time. Clear highlight was our walk along the foreshore at sunset on the last night there. It was calm and warm and low tide. Small wavelets were coming ashore and washed against our feet as we waded through the tepid water. A small red-billed gull trotted with us almost the whole way. When we stopped, it stopped. He/she just seemed to enjoy our company and wasn't fazed by the odd beach buggy whizzing by either. Cute bird.

Before we left home I grabbed a few CDs I thought the others may enjoy and this Cal Tjader was one of them. Appropriate title. After our walk in the sunset that night we came back to a snack of crackers, lovely smoked cheddar, a beautiful guava chutney made by a lady who runs the seaside cafe and also smoked mushrooms. And of course the requisite wine. I popped this CD into the player and it was just perfect for the occasion.

Thought I'd share it with you. It's the title of a Johnny Mandel song of course. In fact the whole album is a tribute to Johnny. Have a vocal version of the number on Peggy Lee's "Extra Special" disc which you'll find under her name in the Labels column.

If you'd like more detail regarding this album, here's some interesting info from jazz critic Alex Henderson:

When people think of Cal Tjader, they think of latin jazz. The vibist wasn't Hispanic himself, but, like trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, he demonstrated that a jazzman didn't have to be a Latino to be considered a master of afro-cuban rhythms. However, not everything that Tjader played had a strong Latin influence -- latin jazz was only one of the styles that he played and he sticks to a non-Latin approach to bop on "The Shining Sea". Percussionist Poncho Sanchez, who considered Tjader a mentor and played with him extensively during the last seven years of the vibist's life, isn't on this album. Instead Tjader leads a quintet that employs Scott Hamilton on tenor saxophone, Hank Jones on piano, Dean Reilly on bass and Vince Lateano on drums. Produced by the late Carl Jefferson in 1981 -- the year before Tjader's death -- this extremely melodic date is a tribute to composer Johnny Mandel. Hamilton and Jones have plenty of solo space and that's a good thing because this Mandel tribute called for soloists who weren't afraid to be lyrical. The quintet is as cohesive on "Emily" as it is on "Quietly There", "A Time for Love", and the title track. Equally triumphant is the quintet's interpretation of the "Song From M*A*S*H"; like Bill Evans (the pianist, not the saxophonist), Tjader and his allies demonstrate that the "Song From M*A*S*H" can easily lend itself to a jazz interpretation. "The Shining Sea" is not only an inspired salute to a great composer -- it's also one of the best albums from Tjader's Concord period. ~ Alex Henderson

#56: BRIAN AUGER & THE TRINITY - OPEN (MARMALADE 1968) Jap mastering cardboard sleeve + 4 bonus

From the outgrowth of Steampacket, a band that included not only Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll, but also a young Rod Stewart, came Auger and Driscoll's collective effort that produced two albums. When Driscoll left in 1969 to pursue a solo career, Auger, drummer Clive Thacker, and bassist Dave Ambrose continued as Brian Auger & the Trinity. Open has been unfairly characterized as a kind of groove jazz rip, one that combines Wes Montgomery, Jimmy McGriff, and the rock sensibilities of the psychedelic era. Whatever. There are many tracks here, from deep grooved funky jazz to lilting ballads and greasy blues numbers and the skronky exotica number "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph." Auger may not have been as gifted an organist as Alan Price technically, but he could more than hold his own on the Hammond B-3 (as evidenced by the first two tracks here which are instrumentals, "In And Out" and "Isola Nate"). He was also able to pull more sounds out of the instrument than any of his peers. Auger wasn't much of a vocalist, but he could dig deep and get the emotion out of a song -- especially in a funky number like "Black Cat," which featured a killer though uncredited studio horn section. Driscoll's contributions are all on the second half of the album, beginning with the shuffling choogle of Lowell Fulsom's "Tramp," continuing through a moving reading of Pops Staples' "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)," two Auger originals, and concluding in a reading of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" that single-handedly established her reputation as a vocalist of great interpretative ability and emotional dexterity. Almost eight minutes in length, it is the perfect interplay for the quartet with its dark, smoky swirling energy and extant soul groove, and capos the album on a high note, making it a delightful precursor to the classic Streetnoise which was to follow.[allmusic]Here

#57: V.A. - Respect: Aretha's Influences and Inspiration
Music » Music Box - Divers :: GROVER
13 February 2010
alt
Release Date: Mar 10, 2009
Aretha Franklin is not especially thought of as a "cover" artist since she wrote a good deal of her own material (and had many songs supplied to her to interpret first), but she has covered many soul, R&B, and gospel songs on record. The idea behind Respect: Aretha's Influences and Inspiration is a very good one: to collect a couple dozen versions of songs, often the original ones, that Franklin herself would record, usually on Atlantic in the late '60s and early '70s (though songs that she recorded prior to 1967 on Columbia and even her teenaged '50s gospel sides, are also represented). A few of the tracks on this CD are very well known, and in fact were sometimes even big hits in their own right, like Dionne Warwick's "I Say a Little Prayer," Nina Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," Otis Redding's "Respect," Brenda Holloway's "Every Little Bit Hurts," Ray Charles' "Drown in My Own Tears," James Carr's "The Dark End of the Street," and Ben E. King's "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)." For the deeper soul fan, however, the chief pleasures are the more obscure templates that you might not already have in your collection, including cuts by legends like Wilson Pickett, Bobby Bland, Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles, Bill Withers, Percy Mayfield, Johnny Ace, James Carr, Howard Tate, and Bobby Womack. Especially interesting are the more obscure source points for Franklin, like Thelma Jones' little-known original version of "The House That Jack Built"; Dinah Washington's "Soulville," one of the hardest-rocking tracks she ever did; efforts by singers (Jean Wells on "Sit Down and Cry," and Mary Wheeler on "Prove It") who are known almost exclusively to soul collectors; and lowdown blues by Big Maybelle (on "Pitiful"). Owing to Franklin's taste and the skills of her predecessors, the effect is very much like that of hearing a good soul/R&B mix tape, but one with thoroughly expert annotation and packaging. Even some of the well-known cuts are made more interesting to experts by the use of (in the case of Redding's "Respect" and King's "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)") rarer LP versions. It does have to be said that it can't quite maintain the level of songs that were classics in their pre-Franklin incarnations (like the aforementioned ones by Redding, Simone, King, and Warwick, as well as Don Covay & the Goodtimers' "See Saw") throughout. Little Miss Cornshucks' "Try a Little Tenderness," for instance, is quaint next to the soulafied treatments of Redding or Franklin. On the whole, however, it's that too-rare cross-licensed thematic compilation that's both highly entertaining and highly educational.

Track list:

01.Otis Redding - Respect
02.Thelma Jones - The House That Jack Built
03.Don Covay & the Goodtimers - See Saw
